SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1

Karaoke at The New Village Brewery in Oriental, 4 p.m.

The Lexus Cup (sponsored by Johnson Lexus of Raleigh and presented by NYRA).This race, previously known as the Michelob cup, is a pursuit start, distance race from Oriental back to Blackbeard sailing club in New Bern. Race organizers say “the biggest party of the year will be held at the New Bern convention center following the race on Sunday evening”. Open Sailing with Bow To Stern every Monday in Oriental. Bow to Stern invites you to come sailing on their fleet of Cape Dory Typhoons. Not sure how to sail? They’ll pair you with an experienced sailor. Afterwards, hang out with everyone at the fire pit and watch the sun set over the creeks. Check in and get your boat assignment at 5 p.m., leave the docks at 5:30 p.m. Return at 7:30 p.m. for refreshments and socializing. (Bring a snack and drink to share). Sign up for the Old Theater’s Got Talent – a variety talent show happening Sept. 22. Sign up now. No entry fee, open to groups and individuals. Oriental’s Mayor and Board of Commissioners have scheduled a Special Meeting with a one item agenda: An open session meeting to discuss the Special Use Permit process. 10 a.m.

Information / orientation session for prospective HeartWorks volunteers at HeartWorks, 709 Main Street in Bayboro. Meet current volunteers, take a tour and learn about the program. Volunteers are needed to help in the classrooms as well as provide enrichment activities or individual tutoring once or twice a week. Read more about HeartWorks here. Tom and Lib Campbell Presentation on Politics and Democracy, Pamlico County Courthouse, Sponsored by Pamlico Partners for Democracy. For over 50 years Tom Campbell has observed and commented on North Carolina politics and public policy. Tom's family founded Campbell University and WNCT-TV the first TV station east of Raleigh. Tom worked in the family business for 24 years, later serving as Assistant Treasurer of North Carolina before purchasing WRAZ-TV "Fox 50" in the Raleigh Durham market, 7 p.m.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

Oriental Farmers Market, by the harbor, 8-11 a.m.

The Pamlico Department of Health, Animal Control and Oriental Village Veterinary are partnering to provide pet owners with rabies vaccinations at a low cost. The rabies clinic will be in the parking lot behind the Pamlico Courthouse. Call Animal Control at 252-745-3203 with any questions. 8 a.m.-11 a. m.

Community Yard sale at the County Opry in Grantsboro. So mark those calendars and come treasure hunt with us, 8 a.m.

Cycling from Oriental. Rides start at 8:30am from the Bean from spring to fall, as the weather permits. In the fall, the start time switches to 10:00am. The Sunday ride is fast, with pace and distance decided by the riders, usually between 15-17 mph for 25-30 miles in a single paceline format. Just show up with bike and helmet and you’re off! Oriental’s Drummin’ Dragons get together every Sunday afternoon. You’ll find them in Lou Mac Park in Oriental on Sunday afternoons in summer, weather permitting. In inclement weather, they gather at the Oriental United Methodist Fellowship Hall (and possibly for the winter). All are invited – come on by and learn to drum. Pamlico County Library Book Sale, Starting Saturday, March 9th, the Friends will hold monthly book sales at the white trailer (annex) located behind the current library. We will be open from 10:00am to 2:00pm on the second Saturday of each month. Take as many books as you wish and donate what you can...no set prices. We look forward to seeing you! 10-2 p.m.

Karaoke at Squidders Bait and Tackle in Vandemere returns! (Read about Squidders here) 7 p.m.

The 33rd Greens Creek Challenge Regatta is a late-summer Oriental tradition that features boats 20 feet and under racing on Greens Creek and a rubber chicken waiting to be rescued. Sailors launch from Bow to Stern. Skippers Meeting is 9 a.m. First horn is 11 a.m. Picnic lunch at noon. Second horn at 1 p.m. Awards at 5 p.m. Classes include all boats 20 ft and under. Who Lived in Pamlico County First? Native Americans of Pamlico CountyNew Exhibit opens Friday, September 27, at Oriental's History Museum. Native Americans of the Algonquian tribes lived in this area long before white men came to these shores. The Museum's new exhibit explores their history, culture, and living environment. On display will be our collection of artifacts coming mostly from the shores of the Neuse River, tossed up during storms and collected by local residents.This exhibit will run through mid January 2025. Oriental's History Museum is located at 802 Broad Street. Hours are: Friday 11-3, Saturday 1-4. Admission is always free, donations gratefully accepted. Harborfest for HeartWorks 2024. Support over 400 at-risk Pamlico County children who attend free Afterschool and Summer Programs and/or receive counseling at StillWaters. Attend Harborfest for HeartWorks, a Gala evening of dinner, drinks, live music, dancing, and a live auction all at River Dunes. Get tickets or register to become a sponsor. Tickets must be purchased by September 20, 5:30 p.m.

RESOURCES

People living with Parkinson’s Disease in and around Pamlico County now have a support group. Pamlico Parkinson’s Network provides a place to talk, as well as learn what those with PD can do – and what’s being done – to deal with the still-incurable condition. PPN meetings are open not only to people with Parkinson’s but also to those who care for – and about them. For more info, contact Dave at [email protected], Kim at 670-8987

The Pamlico Progressives are a concerned group of citizens who seek to bring about change by focusing on issues that affect our community and by holding elected officials accountable. They seek to let our collective voices be heard to influence positive change. They meet as needed. All are welcome to join them. Alcoholics Anonymous meets throughout the week at several locations in the area: At Oriental Free Will Baptist Church at 600 Ragan Road in Oriental, Tuesdays at 8p, and again Friday nights at 8p. (2nd brick building on the left).

At Alliance United Methodist Church at 687 Main Street in Bayboro, Thursday at 7:30 pm. (a great meeting for new members).

At St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 402 Freemason Street in Oriental, Sunday at 7 p.m.

Al-Anon – for those worried about someone with a drinking problem – meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at 403 Mildred Street in Oriental. It is open to all.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) – At Oriental Free Will Baptist Church at 600 Ragan Road in Oriental (2nd brick building on left). Open Meeting Tuesdays from 6:30-6:70 p.m. Women’s Group Saturday 6:30p.

Narcotics Anonymous – A group atmosphere which provides help from peers, and offers an on-going support network for addicts who wish to pursue and maintain a drug-free lifestyle. Never Alone – meets Wednesday at 7 pm. at Alliance United Methodist Church, 687 Main Street in Bayboro.

The Pamlico Survivors of Suicide Support Group (SOS) is a free support group for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide. Whether it happened recently or decades ago, all are welcome to attend these sessions which are led by experienced counselors. *Prime Time Needs Volunteers for Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival : Meal Preparation & Serving. Prime Time will again be serving its delicious Cuban Black Beans & Rice at the OFPMF (Friday October 4 & Saturday October 5). We need volunteers for multiple tasks: advance food preparation, loading & unloading of supplies, working in the food tent and clean-up. We are also asking for donations of baked items and beverages.

*The Neuse Neighbors Network (NNN) needs you. NNN is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to helping local seniors age in place. NNN volunteers choose the type and timing of the tasks they can help with. There are no fixed commitments and you can meet new people. *Child Advocates Needed: The NC Guardian ad Litem Program for Judicial District 3B (Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties) is recruiting volunteer Guardian ad Litem Child Advocates. We provide training and support for this important role as the "voice of the child" in court. When a petition has been filed alleging that a child has been abused or neglected, the Guardian ad Litem Child Advocate is appointed by the Judge to do an independent investigation of the child's circumstances, get to know the child and their wishes, and provide information in court about what is truly in that child's best interest. *Pamlico County Senior Services needs more volunteers to help build handicap access ramps at the homes of some of Pamlico’s older residents. Senior Services provides the materials while volunteers led by Tim Balfour construct one ramp every month. Contact Tim at 745-3247 to offer a hand for the next project.

*Pamlico County Fishes And Loaves is collecting canned goods and has a drop-off point inside First Citizens Bank in Oriental. Fishes and Loaves is a cooperative effort of a number of churches and organizations in Pamlico County working to provide food to the hungry.

*Horses of Pamlico is looking for volunteers to visit the horses or help with farm repairs. They would like to have regular volunteers who can commit to at least one day a week. No experience with horses necessary. Must sign a waver. Text Sharon Vandiford for more information, 252-474-7838
