Wednesday Night Sail Race. Boats rendezvous at Oriental Marker #1SC on each Wednesday for a relatively carefree race around the government marks. Just show up. The race does the “normal” US Sailing countdown. Which ever is more upwind, Garbacon or Adam’s Creek, is the weather mark, round the other as the leeward mark and finish at Oriental 1. The Oriental Woman’s Club announces their annual plant sale Saturday on Hodges Street near the Wits End, across from the harbor. Perennials, annuals, bulbs for sale – all for $1. 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Shred Event Saturday, in the back parking lot of the Pamlico County Courthouse in Bayboro. It’s free. Bring up to 75 pounds of personal papers to be shredded. Sponsored by the Local Government Federal Credit Union. For more info call 252-745-4421, 9 a.m. – noon

The Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival’s fundraiser. Southern Hellcats perform at The Red Rooster, behind The Silos. 2024 Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival t-shirts will be on sale. The event is free, but donations are encouraged. 5 p.m.

Karaoke at Squidders Bait and Tackle in Vandemere returns! 7 p.m.

SUNDAY, MAY 5 Cinco de Mayo

Local artists show off their work at the Arlington Place Arts & Crafts Fair. Find glass work, jewelry, pottery, mixed media art and more at the Arlington Place clubhouse. Arlington Place is at 57 Burton Farm Rd, Arapahoe, NC. 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Old Theater Presents Helt Oncale at The Old Theater in Oriental. His music stylings range from rhythm & blues to rock & roll, country and bluegrass to Cajun. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online here or at Nautical Wheelers at 411 Broad St. Doors open at 2:30p. For more information, call 252-617-2125, 3 p.m.

Oriental’s Drummin’ Dragons get together every Sunday afternoon. You’ll find them in Lou Mac Park in Oriental on Sunday afternoons in summer, weather permitting. In inclement weather, they gather at the Oriental United Methodist Fellowship Hall (and possibly for the winter). All are invited – come on by and learn to drum. MONDAY, MAY 6

Pamlico County Board of Education Meeting, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (monthly)

Board of Commissioners meeting, The meeting is in the Patsy Sadler Room at 7p, in the Courthouse Annex, unless there is a larger crowd. Then meetings are held in the second floor courtroom. The Courthouse is at 202 Main Street, Bayboro, NC 28515. 7 p.m. (bi-monthly)

The Pamlico Chorale meets every Monday, 4 – 5:30 pm at The Oriental United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The Chorale performs in concert at least four times a year, including Spirit of Christmas weekend and opening the Croaker Festival.

TUESDAY, MAY 7

Oriental Town Commissioners meeting, Town Hall. Open to the public, 6 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8

Oriental’s Town Board meets at Town Hall for the second budget meeting, 9 a.m.

Get your pets a rabies vaccinations and / or microchipped for a low cost at Grantsboro Town Hall. Rabies vaccinations and Microchips are $10 each. Cash only. CATS AND FERRETS MUST BE CRATED. One animal per carrier. Dogs must be leashed and kept in your vehicle. 1 and 3 year vaccines will be available. Must have previous vaccine records with you to obtain the 3 year vaccine. PAWS – the Pamlico Animal Welfare Society – will be on site selling hot dogs and drinks. Proceeds help assist animals in need in Pamlico County. The Old Theater Presents The Foreign Landers at The Old Theater in Oriental, Thursday, May 9.

The Old Theater Presents The Foreign Landers at The Old Theater in Oriental. The Foreign Landers are Trans-Atlantic duo David and Tabitha Benedict. David, who grew up in South Carolina, plays mandolin. Tabitha, of County Armagh, Northern Ireland, plays the five-string banjo. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online here or at Nautical Wheelers at 411 Broad St. Tickets for sold-out shows may become available at the door last minute. Despite facing challenges, including a family tragedy, Dee Dee has risen to success and serves as a positive role model. He will share his experiences with the children, discussing how music has guided him through life. The workshop will include performances showcasing his musical talents and an inspirational session for the young participants. New Village Brewery hosts a fundraiser with YNTO – Youth Navigating Towards Opportunity. Jim Kellenberger will serve BBQ Chicken, slaw, baked beans, dinner roll, dessert and water for $15 a plate- cash or check only. Hoff n Finch play in the beer garden from 6-8p. YNTO is a local non-profit that offers free youth programs in basketball, wrestling, dance/cheering, art, tutoring, robotics, photojournalism and mentoring. Because of the support they receive through fundraisers like this one, they have been able to expand their offerings to include drones, pottery, and 3-D printing. 5 p.m.

Marine Craft holds the second Clean Sweep Extravaganza. The Clean Sweep Extravaganza is a contest to see who can collect the most trash (that fits in a garbage bag) from road and water ways in and around Broad, Brown, or Coffee Creeks OR the area around Marine Craft at Old Lupton Rd. Clean by boat or land – your choice. Top three spots with the most trash collected wins cash prizes: $150 for first, $100 for second, and $50 for third place. You must register to win. Registration opens at 9a at the Marine Craft booth. Craft vendors will be on site, including local artists. Food vendor Nacho Shack Food Truck will have food for sale. Breakfast At Brantley’s has been rescheduled for Friday, May 24 at 7:30p & Sunday, May 26 at 3p at The Old Theater. Your tickets from March will be good for those days.. If you’d like a refund, please head to Nautical Wheelers starting Sunday, March 3. Based on real Oriental residents from the 1980s. Written by Bill Gould, directed by Ben Gaskill, and performed by The Dragon’s Den Theatrical Troupe. Tickets are $20. Available at Nautical Wheelers and at the door of The Old Theater. Proceeds from the performance go to Oriental’s History Museum. Narcotics Anonymous – A group atmosphere which provides help from peers, and offers an on-going support network for addicts who wish to pursue and maintain a drug-free lifestyle. Never Alone – meets Wednesday at 7 pm. at Alliance United Methodist Church, 687 Main Street in Bayboro.

The Pamlico Survivors of Suicide Support Group (SOS) is a free support group for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide. Whether it happened recently or decades ago, all are welcome to attend these sessions which are led by experienced counselors. *People living with Parkinson’s Disease in and around Pamlico County now have a support group. Pamlico Parkinson’s Network provides a place to talk, as well as learn what those with PD can do – and what’s being done – to deal with the still-incurable condition. *Child Advocates Needed: The NC Guardian ad Litem Program for Judicial District 3B (Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties) is recruiting volunteer Guardian ad Litem Child Advocates. We provide training and support for this important role as the "voice of the child" in court. When a petition has been filed alleging that a child has been abused or neglected, the Guardian ad Litem Child Advocate is appointed by the Judge to do an independent investigation of the child's circumstances, get to know the child and their wishes, and provide information in court about what is truly in that child's best interest. *Pamlico County Senior Services needs more volunteers to help build handicap access ramps at the homes of some of Pamlico’s older residents. Senior Services provides the materials while volunteers led by Tim Balfour construct one ramp every month. Contact Tim at 745-3247 to offer a hand for the next project.

*Pamlico County Fishes And Loaves is collecting canned goods and has a drop-off point inside First Citizens Bank in Oriental. Fishes and Loaves is a cooperative effort of a number of churches and organizations in Pamlico County working to provide food to the hungry.

*Horses of Pamlico is looking for volunteers to visit the horses or help with farm repairs. They would like to have regular volunteers who can commit to at least one day a week. No experience with horses necessary. Must sign a waver. Text Sharon Vandiford for more information, 252-474-7838
