The March 27 Board of Education meeting was filled with great news about new school construction and what the county’s kids are accomplishing. The board meets at 6 pm on the fourth Monday of every month at 507 Anderson Dr. in Bayboro. Meetings are also livestreamed on the board’s YouTube channel.
Celebrating student achievements
Pamlico High’s girls’ basketball team advanced to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 2A State Championship Game. They ultimately finished the season as the state runner-up. This was their first East Final since their championship in 2019. “ That was a remarkable run by our basketball team,” Superintendent Johnson said. “We’re really proud of them.
The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) competed in orienteering at the national level, ultimately finishing 13th in the nation.
SkillsUSA chapters at both the middle and high schools performed well in their regional competitions. Twenty SkillsUSA students will complete at the NC State Leadership and Skills Conference in April.
Talin Gibbs is Pamlico County Middle School’s Rotary Student of the Month. Talin is described as a great student leader who is socially and academically engaged.
Josh Behrens is the Rotary Student of the Month at Pamlico County High School. Teachers praised Josh for his progress at school and positive attitude.
The book fair at Pamlico County Primary School grossed nearly $16,000.
School construction update
Michael J. Konieczka from Metcon, Inc. presented an update on construction at the new school. “This is the exciting part of each project for me, personally,” Konieczka said. “Starting the project and coming to the end, that’s when you see the most of me… we have a promise we want to deliver to you, and that is to get students into school here.”
Konieczka reported that there are now 20 to 25 subcontractors completing projects at the school each day, with around 195 tradespeople working on the campus.
The drywall has been installed with a process that involves skimcoating with plastic. This process will ensure a more durable finish. They are beginning to install lighting in the school.
They aim to have a walkthrough by May 31 and a building stocking permit that will allow the district to begin bringing in furniture by June 1.
The board also discussed a plan to allow a final walkthrough at the old high school for those who want to visit, remarking that three generations of Pamlico students have walked through those halls.
Computer Science to replace one elective
A recently passed state law, House Bill 8, requires all incoming 2026 freshmen to complete at least one computer science class during high school. To keep the number of credits needed for graduation the same, the class will replace one of the electives students can now choose. The high school is creating multiple pathways students can take to fulfill this requirement so they are not all funneled into a single course.
